4. How to choose a water treatment system

1. Whether water from a well needs to be treated

Water from a well does not undergo primary treatment, as in the case of centralized water supply. And its composition does not meet drinking water standards. Regardless of the depth of the well, various contaminants may be present in it. This may be iron impurities, calcium and magnesium salts, pesticides, nitrates, dissolved gases, unpleasant taste and odor. The presence and concentration of impurities depend on the location of the source, nearby enterprises and the ecological state of the area.

In private homes, water is used for many needs, but the priority is water filtration to drinking water, compliance with the norms of SanPin 2.1.3684-21. Filtration of water to drinking water may require 5 or more stages of purification. The main indicator is the amount of impurities and performance.

2. Filtration stages

Regardless of the choice of filtration technology, mechanical water purification is mandatory first. This can be mesh or cartridge filters. The degree of purification of mesh filters is from 80 to 100 microns, made of a frame and mesh. Cartridge polypropylene filters have a higher degree of contaminant retention up to 1 micron.

The next step is de-ironing. Depending on the type of iron, equipment is installed to oxidize the medium. The most common solution is the installation of an aeration column and a deferrizer.

Water softening. Well water contains hydrocarbonates and sulfates, which make water hard. The removal of impurities is carried out by ion exchange plants.

Organic contaminants. A carbon filter is used. Due to its high adsorption properties, it completely removes organics and improves organoleptic parameters of water.

Disinfection. Removal of bacteria and viruses.

Heavy metals, nitrates. Reverse osmosis systems. Obtaining drinking water with a very high degree of purification.

3. Filtration methods and typical solutions

Mechanical treatment. The water stream comes from the well under pressure and may contain large or small undissolved impurities. Their diameter can be as small as 5 microns. Visually they are not always noticeable. They may be silt, sand, algae, rock fragments. To eliminate them, a coarse filter is installed. It is installed before the water intake. The lack of coarse cleaning will lead to the ingress of solid impurities on the fine filters. This will lead to the breakage of elements, as well as stop valves. The filters are washed manually. Some modifications are equipped with a control unit that allows you to clean the filter in automatic mode.

Aeration columns. Remove impurities of iron and manganese, remove dissolved hydrogen sulfide and ammonia gases. Saturate water with oxygen. There are pressure and non-pressure type. The method is based on the oxidation of water with the supply of air. After that, due to a chemical reaction, a precipitate is precipitated.

Ion units. Soften water by removing calcium and magnesium salts. An ionic resin is used. Hardness salt ions are replaced with sodium as they flow through. Systems are equipped with a control valve to regenerate components. Purification takes place when a concentrated salt solution is supplied.

Sorbent filters. Remove chlorine, organic compounds. Improve the organoleptic properties of water. Activated carbon from coconut shells is used. Or multilevel loads. The filter is washed by applying a stream of water.

Reverse osmosis systems. Capable of eliminating all impurities. At the output we get water purified by 99%. Filtration is made semipermeable membrane. Purified water is almost completely demineralized. Rinsing is carried out with normal water. The system is controlled by a control unit.

Combinations of different treatment methods can be used to obtain clean drinking water. Depends on the initial water composition. Standard filtration schemes:

  • Option 1.

- Water treatment with mechanical filters.

- Sorption filter with multi-component loading.

- Reverse osmosis system.

This option allows you to prepare water for membrane treatment, eliminating undissolved impurities, organic compounds, chlorine. And at the final stage of processing membrane doochistvaet from all minerals and remaining elements. The output is potable water.

  • Option 2.

- Treatment of water with mechanical filters. The choice of filter depends on the diameter of contaminants.

- Ionic installations.

- Reverse osmosis system.

- Mineralizer.

First, water softening takes place, since at high salt content, deposits can appear on the membrane. Next, treatment of the stream from impurities of iron, organics and other impurities. Final treatment with a mineralizer will adjust the composition of water, adding the necessary substances for the body.

  • Option 3.

- Treatment of water with mechanical filters.

- Ionic installations.

- Fine filter.

Ionic installations are able not only to soften water, but also to remove other impurities. Depends on the resin chosen. If, for example, anion exchange resin is used, nitrates are eliminated. It is possible to install several columns with different types of resin. But before doing so, make calculations, how favorable economically.

  • Option 4.

- Treatment of water with a coarse filter.

- Filter with catalytic loading.

- Coal filter.

The water treatment system is designed to eliminate impurities of iron and manganese, hydrogen sulfide. Catalytic loading accelerates the oxidation reaction time. And the finishing treatment improves the taste, eliminates odor.

  • Option 5.

- Treatment of water with a coarse filter.

- Aeration column.

- Carbon filter.

- Reverse osmosis system.

Removes impurities of iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide. The carbon filter removes organic compounds. And reverse osmosis systems demineralize water, making it potable.

When choosing equipment and the option of purification should be guided only by their own indicators of water analysis. Also important is the economic calculation, since certain technologies will require replacement of components or, in the case of ion exchange, salt for regeneration. The most popular filters are reverse osmosis and carbon filters.

4. How to choose a water treatment system

Those who have never encountered a water treatment system ask questions: why install so many filters, can not you buy only one element and get drinking water? This option does not exist for several reasons:

- Universal filters that eliminate all impurities is a relative concept. Such an element can eliminate contaminants that are similar in properties. But the composition of water happens with different types of contaminants or with a high concentration of impurities, then additional treatment will be required.

- System performance. The choice is made on the basis of taking into account the consumption of water for each person.

- Requirements for the composition of water at the outlet. Technical water or for household needs does not need thorough treatment. But drinking water is necessarily purified with a carbon filter or reverse osmosis systems at the finish.

- Drinking water should not be subjected to reagent treatment. Therefore, if the concentration of impurities is high, several filtration elements are installed or methods are combined.

In addition to the main factors of system selection, there is also an economic factor. After all, often equipment is purchased, and maintenance costs are not taken into account. For example, despite the fact that the media is washed with water, periodic replacement of the material is required. Ion systems require a supply of salt tablets for regeneration. The membrane is replaced every 2 years, depending on the contamination of the water coming in for filtration. There are complex variants of filtration systems. Completion differs, depending on the type of contamination.

To obtain high-quality drinking water according to the standards, it is necessary to carry out service maintenance. This means replacing deformed elements, eliminating leaks, washing filters. It is done manually or a control valve is installed. If at the stage of selecting a system there are questions, the best solution will be to contact a specialized company.
