1. Purpose and scope of application of industrial reverse osmosis systems

In this age of information technology, industry still plays a major role in the life of mankind, which provides for our daily activities. Without the functioning of currently operating plants, it is impossible to imagine how things would be in today's reality. Our country has a pillar in the form of developed defense, chemical, metallurgical, pharmaceutical, textile industries. Our well-being and, to a large extent, the quality of life depends on the efficiency and correctness of the work of enterprises.

Correctness of industrial enterprise operation depends on many factors. Quality water treatment and water purification is one of them. Both heavy and light industry use huge amounts of water. For example, metallurgy uses water to cool the hot metal. In this type of industry it is inadmissible to use contaminated, hard water, as undissolved particles, getting into the pores of raw materials, significantly reduce its quality, which leads to poor quality of the final product and its short life. Just imagine what consequences can result from the use of defective rolled products in shipbuilding, manufacturing of spaceships, construction of bridges or high-rise buildings. There are many examples.

The chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries cannot use under-treated water. Only distilled water without any impurities is used in the manufacture of medicines in medicine. Otherwise, medicines will only cause irreparable damage to the consumer up to and including death. The same is true in the production of cosmetics - the presence of foreign impurities in the water used in their manufacture can cause allergic reactions, dermatitis, inflammation of the skin, infectious diseases.

Also do not forget about the damage caused by contaminated water to the equipment itself. Iron, manganese, hardness salts settle on the walls of equipment parts, leading to its overheating, energy overconsumption, narrowing of pipe diameter, corrosion of working metal surfaces. The personnel who allowed the launch of water insufficiently treated according to SanPin requirements into production, inevitably falls "under the article" with consequences of varying degrees of severity depending on the damage caused.

But let's not talk about sad things. Fortunately, at the moment the problem of water treatment in production is easily solved by installing industrial reverse osmosis systems.

What tasks do industrial reverse osmosis systems solve? Let's consider the following.

- First, it is the purification of water from various microorganisms - viruses, bacteria and fungi, the presence of which in the water often contributes to the spread of infectious diseases.

- Secondly, it is purification from heavy metals such as mercury, copper, cobalt, lead, etc. These are the substances that can seriously undermine the normal operation of the human body and significantly reduce the service life of industrial equipment.

- Thirdly, the removal of hardness salts, the so-called softening of water (hardness salts have the property to precipitate on all surfaces with which they come into contact, forming a strong lime scale, which leads to equipment failure. Also, when ingested into the human body, hardness salts settle on the walls of blood vessels, accumulate in the kidneys, provoking the growth of stones, "stick" to the tooth enamel, forming tartar, removal of which requires the intervention of a dental hygienist or even a surgeon).

- Fourth, the removal of all dissolved and undissolved impurities (iron, manganese, sand, silt and all the rest).

As positive side effects of water treatment in this case are the removal of unpleasant odor, color, turbidity and hardness. At the output reverse osmosis produces soft, crystal clear water. As you can see, industrial reverse osmosis systems produce total water purification, removing up to 100 percent of foreign particles, providing also disinfection of water.

It is worth noting that the pharmaceutical and chemical industries require distilled water, which is achieved either by reverse osmosis re-purification or additional filtration methods.

The use of reverse osmosis systems is ideal for industry, as the process does not necessarily or at all allow the preservation of any mineral substances. While in households, the property of reverse osmosis to purify water to a "dead" state can play a cruel joke on the consumer.

2. Design and principle of operation of reverse osmosis systems

2.1 Design of industrial reverse osmosis systems

Installation of industrial reverse osmosis system differs significantly from the household system and includes:

1) Booster pump (pumping unit) - maintains pressure in the system, is made of "stainless steel", due to which it is not subject to corrosion;

2) Pre-filter - makes a fine purification of water.

3) Dosing unit of salt deposit inhibitor.

4) Membranes (presented as a single unit) - one of the main components, on which, in fact, the process of reverse osmosis is tied. Through the membrane unit under pressure and is fed purified water.

5) Automatic controller - performs the functions of monitoring the process of reverse osmosis in the system and its correction.

6) Control and measuring instruments (rotameters, manometers) - control water characteristics, pressure readings, electrical conductivity values. They control the correct operation of the unit.

7) Chemical flushing unit - prepares detergent solution for subsequent automatic flushing of the system.

8) Water mixing unit (helps to change the concentration of impurities in the treated water by mixing it with the previously prepared solution).

All these elements are included in the basic configuration and can be supplemented with other elements for the treatment of impurities.

2.2 Principle of operation of reverse osmosis systems

In general, osmosis is a process that man has observed in nature. Thus, the animal cell removes waste substances outside, while not launching harmful elements inside itself, because it is semi-permeable. If the cell were not so, the living organism would die before it was born, absorbing at the cellular level all the viruses living around. The cell wall in this case is like an osmotic membrane, which is also semipermeable.

Reverse osmosis, strange as it may seem, is a process "inverse" to osmosis, i.e. the opposite happens: a more concentrated solution is pressurized and passes through the reverse osmotic membrane in the opposite direction, from a more concentrated to a less concentrated solution.

How does an industrial reverse osmosis system work? It is based on the uncomplicated process described above, only technologically refined and automated and more complex. Initial water in a concentrated solution under pressure is fed to the membrane unit, which is able to filter up to 99% of various impurities. RO membranes have a porous structure and the pore diameter is approximately equal to the diameter of a water molecule. The purified water, if necessary, enters the water mixing unit, and then into a special tank, from where it is fed further for use. The whole process is recorded and corrected by an automatic controller, which operates the control and measuring devices. The system itself is characterized by uninterrupted and stable operation.
